A two-time world champion and three-time runner-up in F1, Alonso’s team McLaren have confirmed he will leave at the end of the season after 17 years in the sport.
A move to IndyCar has been rumoured for Alonso, particularly as the 37-year-old requires a victory at the Indianapolis 500 to complete motorsport’s triple crown having already won the Monaco Grand Prix and Le Mans 24 Hours race.
Alonso raced in the Indianapolis 500 in 2017 when he retired after 179 laps, and a tweet from the account of the race’s circuit, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which was retweeted by IndyCar, suggested he may be coming back.
The tweet read: “@alo_oficial, DM us if you want to chat. #Indy500 | #INDYCAR”.
