Ford last appeared on-screen as the emblematic character Indiana Jones in 2008 for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which starred the veteran actor alongside Shia LaBeouf and Cate Blanchett. The hit film earned roughly $790 million worldwide and introduced LaBeouf as the archeologist’s son. The 15-year gap between the 2008 adventure and the fifth installment creates concern around continuity, but Marshall assures audiences that they’ll be pleased with the new film.

“It’s a great story, it’s a great character, and I think you’re going to be very happy with this movie,” expressed Marshall while speaking with A.frame. “It’s everything I think that everybody wants out of an Indiana Jones movie.” Not much about Indiana Jones 5 in terms of the overall story has risen to the surface, but audiences can look forward to the new adventure ushering in a brand-new cast of characters, which will include Antonio Banderas, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Mads Mikkelsen.

The upcoming adventure will come from Academy Award-nominated director James Mangold, who obtained a Best Picture nomination in 2019 for his film Ford v Ferrari. Mangold at the helm marks the first time in the franchise’s long and rich history that someone other than the emblematic Steven Spielberg will be seated in the director’s chair. Marshall will return as producer and has been a part of the franchise since its inception with 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark.

While Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull performed strongly at the worldwide box office, audiences were less than impressed with the film, which earned a 53% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s unclear how the film’s reception will impact the direction taken in the new installment, but the promise of an incredible story creates hope that Mangold may recapture the essence of the iconic character.

The upcoming film was scheduled to arrive on July 10, 2020, but faced delays over the past two years due to the pandemic and Spielberg’s work on the Academy Award-nominated film West Side Story. While leaving the directing seat for the brand-new installment, Spielberg will still be a part of the project as a producer alongside Marshall, Kathleen Kennedy, and Simon Emanuel. Indiana Jones has been a staple in the cinematic world for decades, and one can only hope that its return to the big screen will offer new, but familiar levels of excitement and adventure.

Indiana Jones 5 looks to hit theaters on June 30, 2023.
